Teaching Philosophy

While I keep a strict standard of technique, I like to address the interests of the pupil as well. I believe lessons should always have a balance of work and play.

Learning outcomes may include: reading fluency, music theory, improvisation, advanced violin/viola technique, listening skills, sightreading, etc.

Background

I come from a family of educators, so teaching is in my blood. I love to unlock the unique talents of every student, and I firmly believe there is more than one path to teaching and playing music.

My 10+ years of teaching experience includes all levels and ages, and I derive my methodology from multiple sources (Suzuki, Kodaly color strings, ABRSM, LRAM, etc.), so I’m fairly flexible and adaptable to each student.

REVIEWS

Erik is a brilliant violist and pedagogue. He is wonderful with children of all ages, of the highest level orchestra, chamber and solo musician and I recommend him as highly as possible. He worked as a ‘String Assistant’ under my auspices for Santa Barbara Strings for two years. He was a chamber music coach for various ensembles in addition to helping the viola and violin sections of our orchestra. He is well liked by all, polite, affable, incredibly positive, and a top-notch musician.

Mary Beth Woodruff

violinist, artistic director, and teacher

Erik is an amazing teacher. He is very patient and willing to go at the most comfortable pace. Sessions were personalised to what my goals were in regard to my violin understanding and abilities. He demonstrates more difficult aspects of playing well, and is overall very encouraging. He takes the shame out of the scratchy noises I may initially produce. I would definitely recommend Erik for any level and any age.

Jennifer Mohammadi

Student

Erik is an exceptional violin tutor. He has been teaching my 7 year old daughter weekly violin for more than 2 years, and he impressively combines fun and learning for this quite tricky age level. Erik shows great skill and empathy when working with his student. And from a parent point of view, I find Erik is easy to deal with, very professional, and I am happy to highly recommend him.
